Preparing Your Hot Tub for Spring/Summer
With winter drawing to a close and warmer weather just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about opening up the hot tub for the Spring/Summer season. We all know that living in Canada presents challenges for those of us who own pools, spas, and hot tubs, but taking the time to open (and close) your hot tub properly will increase its longevity and help ensure that you can enjoy your hot tub for years to come. Of course, you should always follow manufacturer’s instructions for maintaining your hot tub. With that said, here are some general instructions and tips for opening your hot tub in Canada:
- Remove the cover cap from your hot tub. Inspect it for damage. Unfortunately, many hot tub covers (even “winter covers”) are not made to withstand the harsh winters we take for granted in Canada. If your hot tub cover has been damaged, you can order a top quality, custom fit replacement cover cap that is designed to handle winter in the Great White North.
- If there is any water in the hot tub, remove it. Ideally, you did this when you closed the hot tub down for the season last fall. Even still, if your cover has any leaks or cracks, you may have melted snow and rain water to remove. The best way to completely remove all water from your hot tub is with our Quick Drain/Quick Vac combo.
- Inspect the pump, valves, pipes, and filter casing. Ensure that there are no splits or cracks. If any of these parts are damaged, replace them.
- Thoroughly clean the filter cartridges and hot tub shell. Waxing is also recommended at least every other year.
- Fill the hot tub. As you do, keep a close eye on it, checking for leaks or cracks which may not have been evident to the naked eye before filling.
- Fire the hot tub up and make sure that all controls are properly working. It’s better to discover any problems now (before the season begins) than to discover a problem with your hot tub when you were hoping to use it.
- Add and adjust chemicals to the water according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Enjoy your hot tub!
